ZFPD's Major Garry Key on ventilator battling COVID

From battling blazes to fighting for his life, a longtime member of the Zoneton Fire Protection District, Major Garry Key, finds himself in the hospital after being diagnosed with COVID-19.Major Key has been with the district for more than 35 years, and on Saturday, members from the district took to Facebook to announce he has been hooked up to a ventilator. The news comes a little over a month after the district suffered the loss of former Fire Chief Rob Orkies, who passed away from a combination of cancer and the virus.“It’s bad enough to see anybody die from COVID,” said Public Information Officer, Rich Carlson. “Then just a month or two later you’ve got the battalion chief, or the number two guy, going through the same thing. It just really tears you up inside.”Letters of support have been pouring in from fire departments all over the country, a gesture Fire Marshall Kevin Moulton says is well received, but he says they’re not ....

Rural Kentucky hospitals await Moderna vaccine


Smaller hospitals do not have the facilities or equipment to store Pfizer vaccine in ultracold freezers.

CARROLL COUNTY, Ky. Kentucky should be able to start giving health care workers the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine next week.
The state will receive 38,025 doses of the Pfizer vaccine. Eleven hospitals will receive doses including three in Louisville.
But many hospitals in the area, including hospitals in rural areas, are not going to get any of those first doses.
Only one county in the state is out of the red zone for COVID-19 cases, with some rural areas having higher incidence rates than Jefferson County. Still, vaccine allocation is not about need it’s about resources. ....

2,946 New COVID-19 Cases in Kentucky on Tuesday


Currently on ventilator: 246
Top counties with the most positive cases today are: Jefferson, Fayette, Warren, Daviess and Madison. Each of these counties reported 100 or more new cases; Jefferson County alone reported 418.
The red zone counties for this week can be found here. Community leaders, businesses, schools and families in these counties should all follow red zone reduction recommendations, as well as other orders and guidance.
Those reported lost to the virus today include a 68-year-old man from Boyd County; a 62-year-old woman from Caldwell County; a 77-year-old and 80-year old man from Daviess County; an 88-year-old woman from Graves County; a 77-year-old man from Hardin County; five men from Jefferson County, ages, 61, 64, 78, 83 and 92; a 90-year-old man from McCracken County; and three women from Ohio County, ages 87, and two, both of whom were 91. ....
