Chanukah 2020 in Cincinnati


 
Cincinnati area synagogues and Jewish institutions celebrated Chanukah 5781, which ran from nightfall on Thursday, Dec. 8 through sundown on  Friday, Dec. 18, with a variety of events for every age and interest, adapted for the current pandemic. The staff of The American Israelite spread out across town to cover as many of those events as possible.
 
Public menorah lightings and events
On Tuesday morning, Dec. 8, Mayor John Cranley hosted his annual pre-Chanukah party in his office at city hall. Rabbi Gershon Avtzon demonstrated the lighting of the menorah and shared lessons about the holiday. This year’s event was smaller than in the past in order to observe Covid-19 restrictions on indoor gatherings. ....

Rabbi Moshe Ber Beck Endured a Nearly a Century of Struggle for His Beliefs

Rabbi Moshe Ber Beck was 10 years old in the spring of 1944 when the Nazis invaded Hungary. He spent many months hiding in a bunker in Pest, the eastern side of the Hungarian capital Budapest before he and his family were able to leave. With his mother gone, having been taken to Auschwitz and killed, he and what remained of his family, along with millions of refugees, traveled through Europe to find a home. In 1948 he traveled to Palestine where lived and studied in Jerusalem’s ultra-orthodox community in Mea Shearim. He remained there until 1967 when he left Palestine never to return. ....
