The Fairfield Police Department says it has seen an increase in overdoses recently involving Fentanyl and Heroin-laced Fentanyl. Police say they have responded to three overdoses in the last three days, and officers have rendered life-saving aid to 12 people in the past three months. Police say anyone who sees drug paraphernalia, or similar out-of-place items, should not handle or touch them in any way, but should instead contact the Fairfield Police Department. Fairfield will hold Memorial Day services at the Maple Hill Veterans Cemetery at 11 Monday morning. Mayor Mike Dreith will be the speaker, with Dave Land serving as Master of Ceremonies and Lebanon North CP Church Pastor J.C. McDuffee offering prayer. American Legion Post 176 Commander Tom Seaman and VFW Post 4535 Commander Ron Van Buskirk will lay a wreath at the monument of the unknown service person. 25-year-old Brodey I. Murbarger is set to appear in a status hearing via Zoom in Wayne County Circuit Court at 10:30 Tuesday morning. The county will return to scheduling jury trials on that date, so the hearing will allow his defense and the prosecution to discuss the possibility of setting a trial date. No new evidence or motion outside of scheduling a jury trial is anticipated. Fairfield Community High School sophomore Aiden Whitfield recently won the regional ICTM Geometry competition, earning a medal for placing at the top of more than 30 participants, according to Math Team Coach Tammy Austin. Austin, also Scholastic Bowl coach, also announced Jalysse Kinney was recently named the most valuable player for the varsity scholastic team.

Herbruck's Poultry Ranch employees donate 3,000 pounds of food

Sentinel Staff SARANAC  Michigan’s largest egg producer donated more than 3,000 pounds of food to community organizations through a can drive. Employees at Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch  based in Saranac donated nonperishable food items and toiletries to local food banks, according to a press release issued Friday, March 5. Herbruck’s donated more than 3,000 pounds of food, per the release. Among the local organizations who received donations include Isaac’s Closet, Flat Reach Outreach Ministries, Manna’s Market, the Saranac Community Food Pantry and Zion United Methodist Church. “We are so proud to have a dedicated team that goes above and beyond for the community, exemplifying our core values as a company and helping those in need, especially during this challenging time,” stated Amy Herbruck, marketing and community support manager at Herbruck’s. “We pride ourselves on being good neighbors, and our employees have continuously stepped up to give back and rise

Whitehouse community floods local pantry with food, gifts for holiday The Anthony Wayne Food Pantry run by the Zion United Methodist Church saw plenty of generosity this week leading up to the holiday. The Anthony Wayne Food Pantry in Whitehouse received bags and bags of food and supplies this past week leading up to the holiday. The pantry, which has been around since 1995, is run by Zion United Methodist Church. Pastor Carol Williams-Young says Whitehouse is a fairly affluent community, but even it has seen an increased need because of the pandemic.

Longtime volunteer, A. Rebecca Smith

The people of Cecil County lost a true treasure last week, Miss Ada Rebecca Smith, known to many as “Miss Becky”, passed away at the age of 105. She would have celebrated her 106th birthday on Monday, December 21. The much respected and loved educator and guidance counselor was born on December 21, 1914 in a blizzard and ice storm. Miss Smith was a lifelong member of Zion United Methodist Church. She lived in Cecilton her whole life, except while attending Western Maryland College. After graduating from George Biddle High School in 1931, she graduated from college at the age of 20. Miss Smith was hired to teach at Perryville High School in 1935. In the 10 years she taught there, she was a social studies teacher and a volleyball coach. In 1943, Miss Smith transferred to Elkton High School, where she taught U.S. History. In 1966, she became one of the first guidance counselors in the county. She remained a guidance counselor until her retirement in 1976, having taught and co
