TAIPEI (Taiwan News) Ferret-badgers and rabbits natural hosts that a World Health Organization (WHO) inspector says could have been vectors for the first transmission of COVID-19 to humans were experimented on at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV).
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal published on Thursday (Feb. 18), British zoologist and EcoHealth Alliance President Peter Daszak backed China s theory that frozen meat could have brought the coronavirus to Wuhan. After pangolins and mink were dismissed by many researchers as vectors for human transmission, Daszak claimed ferret-badgers and rabbits could instead have transmitted the disease at Wuhan s Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market. ....

Geneticist debunks China's frozen food theory on Covid origin | Taiwan News

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) A geneticist investigating the origins of the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic has debunked China s claims that the outbreak may have started with frozen food.
After carrying out an investigation into the origins of the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan over the course of a month, two weeks of which was spent in quarantine, the World Health Organization (WHO) echoed findings by China s National Health Commission. The only definitive conclusion of the study was that the virus origin remains unknown and more research is needed.
The WHO posited that there are four possible explanations for the start of the pandemic: a direct jump from animal to human, introduction through an intermediate host, transmission through frozen food, and a lab-related accident. Although high-risk gain of function experiments with bat coronavirus chimeras were being carried out on humanized mice at the Wuhan Institute of Viro ....

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) Although China labels the suggestion that COVID-19 may have leaked out of the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) as a conspiracy theory, the head scientist in that very lab published a paper a decade earlier on a documented lab leak that occurred in Yunnan.
The director of the Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases at WIV, Shi Zhengli (石正麗), also known as Bat Woman, has since 2007 been researching how spike proteins in natural and chimeric SARS-like coronaviruses bind to the ACE2 receptors in the cells of humans, bats, and other animals. Since 2014, she and her team have carried out dangerous gain-of-function (GOF) experiments with bat coronavirus chimeras. ....
