Downtown Kansas City residents displaced by landlord after power outages

All Professional Building Lofts residents were said to be displaced and told to find new homes by March 5 after power outages Saturday. The Alexander Company, an out-of-town landlord, displaced these residents.
The owner is paying for a hotel but tenants’ leases are still terminated. As of today, the Housing Authority of Kansas City confirmed they have 15 voucher holders in the building and are issuing transfer vouchers today.
Councilperson Eric Bunch tweeted yesterday the city council has been trying to get new placements for the residents. He said they were trying to track down the cell phone numbers of some housing authority staff. ....

Northeast News | Jackson County suspends evictions as pressure from KC Tenants mounts

Jackson County 16th Circuit Court Judge J. Dale Youngs signed an Administrative Order on Monday, Jan. 11 to temporarily suspend issuing evictions through January 24, or until the order is amended or revised.
The order cited significant, and at times violent, social and political unrest, and the spread of COVID-19 within the court and the community.
The Court Administrator and Department of Civil Process were ordered to “temporarily suspend issuance of all writs of restitution in all actions filed under Chapters 534 and 535 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri.”
The Court Administrator was also ordered to temporarily suspend the issuance of summons in all of these chapters in which 534 is Forcible Entry and Unlawful Detainer, and 535 is Landlord-Tenant Actions. Writs of restitution are documents that authorize the local law enforcement authority to schedule an eviction of the tenant. ....

KC Tenants shut down both Jackson County courthouses’ eviction proceedings this week as they successfully launched their Zero Eviction January campaign.  On Tuesday, 103 eviction hearings were halted, with another 219 today.
Anyone driving north on I-71 into downtown this week has gotten the memo: “Evictions during a pandemic are a death sentence.” The banner has hung from a bridge over the interstate since January 1st, as KC Tenants commits to preventing a single eviction from going forward in Jackson County this month. ....
