Environmental campaigners have called for the creation of 250,000 ‘green apprenticeships’ in areas such as renewable energy as part of the effort to address the twin crises of youth unemployment and climate change.
A new report published by Friends of the Earth warns that the impact of youth unemployment during the pandemic could see up to £39bn in lost wages in the UK over the following 20 years, if all young people currently unemployed remain jobless for a year.

The youth unemployment crisis is worsening as a result of the pandemic – but could 250,000 new green apprenticeships help solve this issue?
New research by the environmental campaign group Friends of the Earth shows creating 250,000 green apprenticeships leading to jobs in renewables, woodland creation and peatland restoration would help address youth unemployment and help tackle the climate emergency.
The report, which was published today ahead of the Chancellor’s Spring Budget, estimates if all young people currently unemployed remain jobless for a year, that could lead to £39 billion in lost wages in the UK in the next two decades. ....
