Estate flock halves feed cost and lifts scan rate to 186%
Estate flock halves feed cost and lifts scan rate to 186% >More in © Jelly Bean Creations A major system overhaul on a lowland estate has lifted scanning rates and cut bought-in feed costs by £6.28 a ewe over the past five years. The team at Overbury Estate, near Tewksbury, Gloucestershire, is aiming to rear 1.75 lambs a ewe this year from its 1,100-head cross-bred flock after scanning at 186%. This is a major improvement from the 2018 performance, when the flock scanned at 140%. Impressively, feed costs have fallen by 58% since 2016 to £4.40 a ewe. We asked the Overbury Estate team how they achieved this. 890 ewes and 200 ewe lambs
