NZIER report's view of RSE workers 'gut-wrenching'

NZIER report s view of RSE workers gut-wrenching 26 Apr, 2021 11:15 PM 2 minutes to read By: Jared Morgan A report questioning the economic value of the overseas workforce to Central Otago s horticulture and viticulture sectors has been labelled as flawed. New Zealand Apples and Pears chief executive Allan Pollard was in Central Otago when the report, Picking Cherries , carried out by The New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) for the Productivity Commission was released. A draft version of the report had been flagged by New Zealand Apples and Pears in December for raising points, such as about the economic value of recognised seasonal employer (RSE) workers from the Pacific, the organisation felt needed to be challenged.

Growers 'devastated' as apples rot in Hawke's Bay orchards

SUPPLIED Orchardist Bruce Mitchell left six blocks of royal gala apples on the trees this season due to a lack of pickers. “I was desperate and did everything I could to find people to harvest the apples, but on the day, we started, I was expecting 20 pickers and only two people turned up, so we physically couldn’t pick 40 per cent of the gala crop.” Mitchell is among hundreds of orchardists and exporters who have left export quality fruit on the trees or compromised quality with fruit not picked at the optimal time. “We can’t continue to spend money on keeping our business alive without a guarantee of labour in the future. It’s just not possible,” Mitchell said.
