In 2019, the University of Otago bred more than 67,000 animals that it then killed without using for any scientific purpose.
That year, the university was responsible for half of all the animals killed in New Zealand that had been bred but not used for research, testing and teaching (RTT) purposes.

Huntaway puppies have brains repeatedly injected in experiment revealed by animal rights group


All dogs were then euthanised 24 hours after the final injections and their brains then dissected.
A Massey University spokesman said the research would inform and contribute to other research underway around the world to find an effective treatment for Mucopolysaccharidosis IIIA, also known as Sanfilippo syndrome in humans.
“[It] is an uncommon but devastating genetic disease that causes fatal brain damage. It is described as a type of childhood dementia and most patients do not reach adulthood, according to Sanfilippo Children’s Foundation. One in 70,000 children are born with the inherited condition.”
The disease has been found to naturally occur in Huntaway dogs, which resulted in them being chosen for the experiment, the spokesman said. ....
