On October 29, the ruling Myanmar junta banned independent online news outlet The Irrawaddy and accused the publisher of violating national security laws. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) condemns the actions of the junta, and urges the authorities to reinstate The Irrawaddy’s publication license and end the forced closure of the outlet.
The military court of Myanmar has sentenced Aung Kyaw, a reporter from the Democratic Voice of Burma, and Ko Zaw Zaw, a freelance reporter with Mizzima News, under a colonial-era law. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) condemns the junta’s use of Section 505(a) of the Penal Code for this breach of press freedom and violation of human rights.

A military court in southern Myeik sentenced Aung Kyaw of the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) and Zaw Zaw, a freelance reporter for Mizzima, to two years in prison over their reporting of anti-junta protests, Mizzima and DVB said.
