Vikings First Round Draft Preview
The NFL Draft begins at 7pm CT, and the rumor mill is running full tilt in advance of an event that will likely draw more viewers than a championship game in any other sport.
I did a synopsis of the teams picking ahead of the Vikings yesterday, and despite some news (Carolina trading Teddy Bridgewater to Denver) and more rumors, I don’t think that changes anything materially from the Vikings’ perspective- same players drafted, different order perhaps. I do think it’s increasingly likely that New England and Washington, and possibly the Bears, will make offers to trade with the Lions and Panthers for QBs Fields and Lance, if available. The Lions especially look like they’ll embrace the rebuild, trading down for more draft capital. The Patriots have the draft capital this year to package in a move up, which would likely include their 2nd round pick and perhaps a couple others, along with #15. The NFL draft is less than a week away, and the most unusual and unprecedented in league history will finally begin.
There’s little doubt that five quarterbacks will be selected in the first round, with most, if not all, likely going very early in the round. It’s expected the Jacksonville Jaguars will select former Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 pick. The New York Jets are expected to grab former BYU quarterback Zach Wilson. San Francisco 49ers’ head coach Kyle Shanahan has said they will select a quarterback. He didn’t say which quarterback and they have kept their decision secret.
Broncoman 2021 Mock Draft 25.0 - After initial FA deals By Broncoman on Mar 16, 2021, 11:26am MDT +
So thought I would do a mock after the first free agent deals with the Broncos. In this draft none of the top 4 QBs were available at 9 so I traded back into the 2nd round and picked up some extra picks this year and next.
So pick 36 - Zavon Collins, LB, Tulsa - The Broncos have interviewed him so I am guessing there is an interest in him. At the top of the 2nd round he makes a ton of sense as an uber athletic LB who can do a whole lot of things. He obviously will have a learning curve as far as competition but with his size and speed, too good of future potential to add an impact player who can line up inside and outside on defense and make plays all over the field.
AGOP - Support For Sam
I am a Sam Darnold believer and want him to succeed in NY. I would give him another prove it year, but this time with better play calling and playmakers. But it is daunting task since the Jets need playmakers at every position. Further, I am skeptical about Zack Wilson who I worry is an injury risk given his size.
I really like the SF offense being brought to NYJ (high % of sweeps and motion) but it requires mobile linemen, fast running backs, and quick receivers that know how to get open. This is a key part of my plan for the offense.
