INEC blames electoral violence on population growth


“This is in spite of increase in voter population from 53 million in 1999 to 85 million in 2019,’’ he added.
Zarewa was addressing the start of a two-day workshop for INEC field officers on the proposed conversion of voting points to polling units.
“Over the years, several challenges have confronted INEC with regard to polling units as a result of population growth, demographic shifts, growth of new settlements and expansion of towns and villages.
“These make the existing polling units to become inadequate.
“Many of the polling units are overcrowded during elections; that brought delays, disruptions, violence and voter apathy.
“Voter access to polling units is fundamental to our elections and to democracy,’’ he said. ....

BabandedeAdamu Yakubu is Nigerien national trading on petty items in Kano. The 35-year-old foreigner explained to The Guardian how he came into Nigeria seven years ago without any document. Yakubu narrated how he usually bailed himself out at the Nigerian borders with N3, 000 or more to immigration officers at the entry point.
Nasiru Mohammad, a Chadian also residing in Kano, has lived there for several years. He shared a similar experience with Yakubu at the Nigerian border. “It is not difficult to get access into Nigeria with or without a passport as much as you are ready to settle the officers at the borders,” Mohammed said. ....

As the new Service Chiefs settle down to confront the worsening security challenges in the country, retired senior military have charged them to avoid the pitfalls of their predecessors.
The former security officers, who spoke to Sunday Vanguard, on the appointment of the military heads, described the development as a welcome one.
President Muhammadu Buhari had, on Tuesday, January 26, 2021, appointed new Service Chiefs after accepting the resignation of former military heads.
According to a statement by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, Buhari accepted the immediate resignation of the Service Chiefs, and their retirement from service. ....
