KwaZulu-Natal-based Zamokuhle Thwala (29) has created a digital crowdfunding platform that empowers smallholder farmers. AgriCool is an online marketplace that links smallholder farmers and buyers to a fair and reliable market. Thwala says the platform also helps farmers secure financial assistance and gives them access to real-time information that they need to improve production. The entrepreneur, who was once a smallholder farmer himself and knows how hard it is to secure the money needed to get started, and then to find good markets for your products. ....
SAB Foundation Social Innovation and Disability Empowerment Awards. The SAB Foundation s primary beneficiaries are women, youth, people living with disabilities and people living in rural areas, or from low-income backgrounds. Founded in 2010, the foundation provides funding for small, medium and micro-sized enterprises in order to contribute to economic and social empowerment. A total R12.6 million in grant funding and business development support was given away to 17 social innovators and disability groups at the 10 th annual SAB Foundation Social Innovation and Disability Empowerment Awards. The ceremony was held virtually on Tuesday. Meat Naturally and Agricool Finance were awarded joint first place in the Social Innovation Awards, while Leafline Washable Sanitary Wear scooped first place in the Disability Empowerment Awards. ....
Feb 2, 2021 Almost 200 fintech businesses applied for the AlphaCode Incubate programme which aims to grow innovative financial services entrepreneurs and find the next OUTsurance or Discovery. Ten of them have been selected for a development programme that provides funding, guidance from performance coaches and a panel of advisory experts, access to AlphaCode’s co-working space and opportunities to apply for further early-stage investment. The 12-week intensive pre-incubation programme is valued at R500 000, including R150 000 in grant funding for each participant. This jump-start programme has just begun and focuses on achieving a viable business. It culminates in a demo day, where participants will compete for a place in a six-month step-up programme.
