Rory Young obituary: The 'Mad Max' of wildlife rangers

Died: April 26th, 2021
Rory Young, who has died aged 49, was a wildlife protector and conservationist who believed passionately that the future of the Earth, and of mankind, was dependant on protecting the planet’s bio-diversity.
His devotion to this cause led to him being murdered in Burkina Faso, a fate he met when a wildlife ranger patrol he was guiding was attacked by gunmen with Nusrat al-Islam, a Saharan affiliate of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. The attackers took him captive, along with two Spanish journalists, David Beriain and Roberto Fraile. A member of the Burkinabe armed forces was also missing after the melee. ....

Two Spanish journalists and an Irish conservationist have been killed after they were ambushed by jihadists, while on an anti-poaching mission in Burkina Faso.
On Tuesday, Spain’s foreign minister, Arancha González Laya, said 44-year-old David Beriáin, a reporter, and 47-year-old Roberto Fraile, a photographer, were believed to have been murdered on Monday, after they were identified from an image provided by Burkinabe authorities.
Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, said on Tuesday afternoon: “We have confirmation of the worst possible news. All our love to the family and loved ones of David Beriáin and Roberto Fraile, who were murdered in Burkina Faso. Irish citizen killed in Burkina Faso was in 'awe' of wildlife and natural world

The Zambian-born Irish citizen who was killed by terrorists in Burkina Faso dedicated his life to wildlife protection in areas of conflict.
Conservationist Rory Young was co-founder and president of anti-poaching organisation Chengeta Wildlife. He was raised in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi. When not working in conflict areas in Africa to prevent wildlife poaching, he lived with his Dutch wife and children in The Netherlands.
Mr Young’s Irish roots appear to be from grandparents on both his father and mother’s sides. In a blog post from 2017, he wrote that his parents were Rhodesisan (Zimbabwean), but his mother’s maternal family had been “loyalist Irish Catholics” and his father’s paternal family had been “rebel Irish Protestants”. ....
