The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has seized 73 locally manufactured firearms and 891 cartridges in Kebbi State. In a tweet yesterday, the service said the arms and ammunition were concealed in a truck conveying locally produced rice. It said the contrabands were seized after some of its officers on patrol searched the truck. It did not say what day the items were seized. Three people have so far been arrested in connection to the illegal transportation of the contrabands, the service said. “Officers of Nigeria Customs Service Federal operation unit zone B, on information patrol along Yauri, Zamare water side in Kebbi State, intercepted a truck loaded with locally produced rice with some sacks concealed under the rice,” the service tweeted. ....
He said the suspects were arrested at a location in Zamare waterside, Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State. According to him, the suspects are assisting the zone with credible information as to the source of the items. “The three suspects were arrested following a credible information received that their vehicle, a Mitsubishi canter, was loaded with 73 single barrel Riffles and 846 cartridges of live ammunitions concealed in 100 KG bags of locally grown rice,” he said. The comptroller also commended other security agencies that assisted in the arrest of the suspects. He further added that his personnel have equally intercepted 11 vehicles and foreign rice smuggled into the country across the states under the zone. ....

The Customs’ Public Relations Officer, Mr Joseph Attah, made this known in a statement on Monday in Abuja, NAN reports. Attah revealed that a truck loaded with locally produced rice was also seized. According to him, sacks which contained weapons were also hidden under the bags of rice. “Three persons were arrested and detained. “However, preliminary investigation is ongoing and they will be made to face the law. “We appeal to the general public, to always provide credible information for effective border security,” he said. ....
