Zalayhar Hassanali on becoming 90: 'Good family life key to productive society'

Zalayhar Hassanali, the widow of this country s second president Noor Hassanali, is hopeful that the fundamentals of a good family structure can be restored in society.
As she celebrates her 90th birthday on Monday, Hassanali told Sunday Newsday in a phone interview that good family relationships were key to a successful and peaceful life and a productive society.
Growing up in Siparia, she recounted her past experiences and attributed her development to a strong family structure which was filled with love, support and humility.
There were also challenges, Hassanali said, but the bond of her family was the main reason for many successes and memorable experiences. ....

Ex-Bishop's Centenary principal remembered as strict disciplinarian

Hannah Demming, former principal of Bishop s Centenary College, Port of Spain, will be remembered as someone with a passion for education who dedicated her life to teaching, encouraging and nurturing young people.
Demming, the mother of four, died at 96 at her Diego Martin home on March 3.
Her son Richard Demming told Newsday on Monday his mother hoped to live to be 100.
“She will be missed. I’m sorry she didn’t make the 100. She was married to a cricketer, and she always said she doesn’t like when the batsman drops out in the 90s. Just one boundary and she would have made it. ....

Aleong receives trophy, $50,000

ELIZABETH ALEONG, who was unable to walk or talk after suffering a bilateral stroke two years ago, received the Angostura Champions Award 2020 last weekend for her work with special needs children.
Aleong has been working with special needs children, including two of her own, through the Caribbean Kids and Family Therapy Organisation (CKFTO).
She received a trophy and $50,000 which will be put to use for her organisation.
The Champions Award initiative is Angosturaâs way of recognising and paying tribute to those in society who give of themselves selflessly to assist others.
It is a biennial programme which was first hosted in 2018, for which Angostura received hundreds of nominations from across Trinidad and Tobago. This year was no different. ....

TWO years ago, Elizabeth Aleong was unable to walk or talk after suffering a bilateral stroke.
After several months of intense therapy, she was able to walk onto the stage of Angostura Holdings Ltd on Saturday night to claim the title Angostura Champion 2020 for her work with special needs children.
She received a trophy and $50,000 which will be channelled into her organisation. ....
