Clashes in Jerusalem ahead of court case on Palestinians' eviction

Clashes in Jerusalem ahead of court case on Palestinians eviction Reuters 3 hrs ago By Zainah El-Haroun JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The troubles erupt after the evening meal that breaks the Ramadan fast, when Jewish settlers, guarded by Israeli police, and Palestinians trade abuse on the streets of East Jerusalem. A long-running legal case, in which several Palestinian families face eviction from homes on land claimed by settlers, is at the heart of the confrontations during the Muslim holy month, with a key court session due to be held on Thursday. Go back to Jordan, settlers shout in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood, a part of Jerusalem that Israel captured from its eastern neighbour in the 1967 Middle East war.

Young Palestinians express little faith in first elections they have known

5 Min Read JERICHO/GAZA (Reuters) - Facing the first elections they have ever been able to vote in, young Palestinians are demanding reforms in the parliamentary and presidential polls later this year. REUTERS/Ibraheem Abu Mustafa Initially many were sceptical about whether the Palestinian elections - the first for 15 years - would even take place after they were announced by President Mahmoud Abbas in January. Many saw the timing as a bid to reset relations with Washington under President Joe Biden, and as a long-overdue response to criticism of Abbas’s legitimacy given that he was elected in 2005 and has ruled by decree for more than a decade since his mandate expired.
