Thanks for joining us tonight from south los angeles, the city of angels, for this special edition of nightline. 25 years ago this week, this community was known as South Central. Scene riots in u. S. History. Five days of violence and mayhem when race and raids collided sparked by the rodney king verdict. As you know, i grew up in california in a koreanamerican family. Like most americans i will never forget watching in disbelief as chaos consumed one of our own cities. Tonight we dont just look back, we examine the lessons we as a nation are still struggling to learn. A lot of people are driving through right now, they dont know why were standing here. By all their measures this is just an intersection of los angeles. This is utter lawlessness. Fires, lootings, beatings. This is where it all came together. This is where it all fell apart. 25 ....

When and if they can open up evacuation areas and whether it will be safe for people to go back into their homes, even for a brief moment to grab medications and other valuables. No one expected rock springs to flood the way it did yesterday, and quickly. Staff is trying to pinpoint what failed to cause the water to inundate that neighborhood. Hauled out in handcuffs and arrested. Then you have a shooting that took place just moments after that. Police noticed notified by our shots by the camera system. When they arrived, they found two men on the ground in front of that home. You see all gun shell casings. Both taken to the hospital, one in surgery right now in critical condition. There were two hard hats nearby. We were told they were both construction workers, not in this area, but they were Walking Around the street when the shooter approached them in a mask, fired the shots and then took off on foot. There is no suspect description or motive at this time. We are working to find out new details, and as soon as we have them, we will pass them along.
