Neighborhood Policing Initiative program expands to Grand Crossing, Englewood and Gresham districts

Chicago Police Supt. David Brown announced Friday that the department’s Neighborhood Policing Initiative program will expand to the Grand Crossing, Englewood and Gresham districts.
The initiative, modeled after the New York Police Department’s Neighborhood Policing program, encourages district coordination officers to engage with residents on a personal level, providing a direct contact between community members and the CPD.
The officers, equipped with cellphones, are to share business cards with residents so they are easily reachable.
“This DCO program requires our officers to go to the community and the settings in the community, even if that means going door to door,” Brown said before speaking to trainees of the program at the McCormick Place Lakeside Center. ....

Mercy Hospital: CHEC demands community involvement in sale process

Members of the Chicago Health Equity Coalition gathered outside of Mercy Hospital on Friday to call on owner Trinity Health Systems to involve community members in the sale process.
The hospital announced Wednesday it has signed a nonbinding agreement with Insight Chicago to sell the historic South Side hospital just months before it’s expected to close its doors for good. Mercy Hospital filed bankruptcy in February.
CHEC, which is made up of several unions and community groups, has been protesting the closure of the hospital since August.
“The folks that represent these doctors, nurses and health care professionals know that we had to band together and lock arms to save this hospital, and we did,” said Shannon Bennett, executive director of Kenwood Oakland Community Organization. KOCO helped found the coalition in August in response to Trinity’s decision to close the hospital. ....

Chicago police joins Operation Safe Pump to monitor high carjacking areas

The South Chicago Police District is partnering with Operation Safe Pump in an effort to prevent carjackings outside grocery stores and shopping centers.
South Chicago District Cmdr. Robert A. Rubio said officers will monitor parking lots and escort shoppers to their cars in areas with higher rates of carjackings. Rubio made the announcement outside Stony Island Plaza, at 95th Street and Stony Island Avenue, site of a carjacking two days earlier.
The Operation Safe Pump and Safe Shop initiative, announced two weeks ago as Operation Safe Pump, is an effort by Early Walker, owner of W&W Towing, and the Kates Detective and Security Agency to combat a surge in carjackings throughout Chicago. Guards from the Kates agency have been posted at gas stations, mostly on the South Side, during busy times. ....
