A local Realtor plans to take on a second 100-kilometre trek to raise funds for Kingston Interval House, this time through the Purcell Mountains.
“This hike will be very different from the Sahara Desert,” Mya Nathan said Thursday afternoon. “It will be in the mountains, we’ll be carrying all of our gear. I’ll be carrying all my gear from campsite to campsite every day. We’ll be sleeping in tents, very rustic, no indoor plumbing, no electricity, no cellphone service. We’ll be giving up, basically, all comforts of home for six days.” ....

Domestic Violence Calls In Canada Almost Doubled During COVID-19 Pandemic

“Those rates are going to go up faster than any of the other social issues that we’re going to see,” Silverstone told HuffPost Canada previously, as calls began rising across Canada last spring.
At the time, one in 10 Canadian women said they “were very or extremely concerned” about being abused at home, according to Statistics Canada.
A Vice World News story published almost a year later found that B.C.’s Battered Women’s Support Services helped people access appointment and crisis services 32,000 times since then.

Coronavirus: Helplines for women, LGBTQ youth increase services amid influx of calls due to pandemic

TORONTO
Nearly one year into the COVID-19 pandemic, domestic abuse faced by women and LGBTQ youth hasn’t slowed, and lockdowns only make matters worse.
With provinces and territories in and out of various states of lockdown, women and LGBTQ youth can be more vulnerable in precarious and unsafe living situations. Whether they’re about an abusive partner or unsupportive parent, the calls haven’t stopped or slowed.
“Pre-COVID-19, we received nearly 50,000 calls annually from women across the province. Between April 1 and Dec. 31 2020, counsellors answered over 70,000 calls. One third of those calls are from outside of Ontario,” Yvonne Harding, manager of resource development at Assaulted Women’s Helpline told CTVNews.ca in an email. ....
