Cymdeithas Waldo, Waldo Williams Society, Hang a Poem as a Leaf success


THE poems of Waldo Williams were fluttering from trees across Pembrokeshire and as far afield as Brittany to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Waldo Williams on May 20.
The initiative was the brainchild of Cymdeithas Waldo, the Waldo Williams Society, which has described their Hang a Poem as a Leaf campaign as a resounding success .
The society, set up in memory of Pembrokeshire poet Waldo Williams, had encouraged his admirers to choose their favourite lines of his work to be printed on labels and hung on trees.
Waldo s single volume of poetry was titled Dail Pren (Tree Leaves) and his poems are deemed to as potent and pertinent today as they were when first published in 1956. He himself saw each poem as a leaf in full bloom adorning a healthy tree. ....

Gwaun Valley will celebrate Hen Galan differently due to Covid


Children singing for Calennig as the Gwaun Valley celebrated Hen Galan (the old New Year) in 2020. This year s celebrations will be different due to coronavirus restrictions
The Gwaun Valley officially begins 2021 today, January 13, as Hen Galan (old New Year) is celebrated.
The valley still celebrates the year turning on the Julian calendar, which was abolished in 1752 and replaced with the Gregorian calendar.
The residents of the Gwaun Valley resisted the change and still ring in the new year on January 13.
Celebrations usually take the form of local children visiting houses in the valley and singing for Calennig.
Children go from house to house singing traditional songs. In return they are given Calennig, sweets or money. Children are also invited into local houses to celebrate. ....

Ysgol Llanychllwydog delivers Christmas hampers to Gwaun Valley's over 70s


The school s parent teacher association (PTA) applied for a In This Together grant from Western Power.
The company s festive fund was set up to support vulnerable people who have been most affected by the coronavirus pandemic and its restrictions, and for whom the upcoming holiday season is going to provide increasing hardship. It has provided £250,000 to help local organisations to deliver vital support and services.
Ysgol Llanychllwydog was awarded £250 to make up hampers for the over 70s living in the Gwaun Valley.
It used the funds to buy fresh veg from Total Produce in Goodwick as well as non-perishable goods such as biscuits, mince pies, cranberry sauce, Pringles and a chocolate orange which were bought in Aldi, Haverfordwest. ....
