Season 2 is directly based on
Shadow of the Night by Deborah Harkness. British Vampire Matthew Clairmont and American witch Diana Bishop travel back to Elizabethan London to hide from the Congregation. Meanwhile, in the present, their families try to find a way to make sure the couple is safe. Matthew and Diana need to find the Book of Life to stop daemons, vampires, and witches from dying out.

The final episode of A Discovery of Witches’ second series airs on Sky One on Friday 12th March, bringing another action-packed season to a close.

And luckily fans won’t have to wait quite so long between seasons as they did last time out: while there was a gap of more than two years between the first and second run, there’s little chance of that being the case this time around, with season three filming having already wrapped.
The news that production had concluded in February was followed by a steady stream of casting announcements later in the same month, with five new additions revealed alongside a major recasting.
The Tudor setting also enabled the introduction of real-life historical characters, including playwright Christopher Marlowe, played by Victoria star Tom Hughes, and Queen Elizabeth (Casualty’s Barbara Marten in a role she was clearly born to play) whose advanced years do not preclude her from flirting with Clairmont.
“I’m having it written into all his main scenes that women find me attractive,” jokes Goode. Also joining the cast is Outlander star Steven Cree, playing Clairmont’s nephew Gallowglass, a towering warrior fierce in battle but equally unafraid of revealing his soft heart.
Sheila Hancock’s Goody Alsop is a powerful witch who Diana meets shortly after arriving back in 1590. She begins to teach Diana her craft and the pair form a close bond. However, Goody’s health is ailing in her older years.
