D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser has hired the city’s first director of gun violence prevention, one of numerous personnel changes announced Thursday amid a surge in fatal shootings and calls from the D.C. Council to reimagine the way the District is policed.
The changes include the departure of chief medical examiner Roger Mitchell Jr., a key architect of approaching crime prevention as a public health issue. Mitchell, who has also served as interim deputy mayor for public safety since August, is leaving government to become a professor and chair of pathology at the Howard University College of Medicine. ....
