jon: some lawmakers are now saying the massacre in tucson should serve as a wake up call and it s time for everyone to tone down some of the angry, political rhetoric. one of them is emanuel cleaver the second, chairman of the black caucus, what are you pointing to senator. reporter: i m not pointing to anything in if particular. i am pointing to something that should be clear to all of us that we have allowed the political discourse to soar to a point where we are really spending time on the floor of the house of representatives condemning individuals rather than legislation, and we have reached the point in politics in our country where the at lewd is, i m right, and you re evil. and that s got to change.
we all know that we can t undue the events that has occurred, however, the city of tucson is obviously very heavily affected and i m proud to be a citizen of tucson as we see the amount of care and thoughts that have been coming forward has been tremendous and we are very proud of that. the community i think is pulling through this very well. there s been tremendous amounts of offerings, and tkpweufgs, a lot of food being brought to the hospital and chick filet came out a few minutes ago, those types of activities are very well appreciated. right now we have eight patients in the hospital, as the doctor also mentioned. two of them remain in the icu, however only one of those two is in critical condition. we have five people still in serious condition at this time, and so there remains two people in good condition. there are still some further, subsequent surgeries that still need to be undertaken, and at this phase, you know, as far as putting things back together
chief justice john roberts called the senseless shooting over the weekend in tucson, arizona. less than an hour from now we expect doctors treating congresswoman giffords will come out and update us on her condition. we know the surgeons at university medical center in tucson acted very quickly in the hour after the shooting. they removed bone and damaged tissue. they also opened up her skull to reduce pressure on the brain. the extent of the damage, still unclear. it won t be known for some time. but doctors say the bullet went through the left side of her brain which controls language and speech, among other things. the latest reports from the hospital say she is communicating, nonverbally, and today, court action for jared loughner, the 22-year-old suspect accused in the attempted assassination of giffords. there s word his attorney could be the same woman who defended oklahoma city bombing conspirator timothy mcveigh and unibomber ted kaczynski, this as we re learning more from eye
