A fifth grade student told President Joe Biden that the ability to pretend like your mic doesn t work was an advantage of virtual classrooms amid the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday.
Biden and first lady Jill Biden heard from students and teachers during a visit to Yorktown Elementary School in Virginia. Students provided a range of responses when asked for their opinions on distance learning as opposed to brick-and-mortar classrooms, with one girl suggesting that napping and avoiding answering difficult questions were among the virtues of virtual classrooms. ....

Fifth graders tell the Bidens virtual learning allowed them to eat and sneak in a nap
Students at a Virginia fifth grade classroom told President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden Monday that virtual learning gave them the chance to eat, take naps, and even fake technical glitches in order to avoid answering questions.
The school, Yorktown Elementary School, is now open four days per week, with students attending Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Students don t come to class Wednesday so the school can be cleaned.
One said, if we were really tired, we could like take a little nap. Another said, sometimes when Ms. B was like paying attention to something else you could eat and it was fun. Yet another student added that, If you don t know the question, you can just pretend like your mic doesn t work. ....

This is often an oversimplified understanding of how science and technology interact with government. Decisions about public-health policy or energy policy almost invariably entail the sorts of competing priorities that should involve the people’s democratically elected representatives. President Joe Biden traveled Monday to coastal Virginia to promote his plans to increase spending on education and children, part of his $1.8 trillion families proposal announced last week.
Visiting Tidewater Community College with first lady Jill Biden, the president discussed his $109 billion proposal to provide Americans with two years of tuition-free community college. He’s also seeking more than $80 billion for Pell Grants to help college affordability and $62 billion for programs that could improve completion rates at community colleges and institutions that predominantly serve disadvantaged students.
The president said that education was the key to the country’s dominance and that people needed classes beyond high school for the nation to be globally competitive. ....
