IMAGINE it. You’re walking through a woodland glade on a lovely spring day. There’s a scent of bluebells, growing things and fresh green leaves in the air. Off to one side, a wickerwork house and circle of logs upended to make seats amongst a grove of oaks mark where a forest school has been set up. There’s a woodland pond, where the iridescent shapes of dragonflies flit and dip across the surface and, at the end of the path you’re following, a picnic area. Through the trees to your left you can see an open-air theatre: that’s where you came to see a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream a few days ago. ....
I am writing to you as City of York Council s executive member for the environment. A lot has been written in the letters pages recently about the merits of the proposals for local government reorganisation. However, what is often missing is an understanding of would be the real impact on the day-to-day lives of York’s residents of merging York with Ryedale, Scarborough and Selby. Such a merger would create a council covering a vast geography (65 miles north/south and 45 miles east/west) with a huge mix of urban, rural and coastal geography. This would result in disruption to our waste collections as four councils’ operations are consolidated into one. ....
THERE is no better time to plant a tree - as we look to the future after the pandemic. York tree planting organisation Treemendous recommends a number of ways residents can get involved by planting their first tree - either at home or as part of one of the city’s wildlife initiatives. Derek Utley, woodland creation champion for the Woodland Trust and a Treemendous member, has recommended planting Rowans - also known as mountain-ashes, cherry trees, crab apple or other fruit trees, silver birches, or field maples. He said trees can be trimmed as they grow to fit the size of the space, adding: “Trees have been around much longer than the human race, and have learnt to adapt to a wide range of conditions.” ....
