The most urgent task for Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae, who was inaugurated in a ceremony Monday, is to do away with judiciary distrust stoked by his predecessor, Kim Myeong-su. Distrust of the court was fanned by trial delays, among other factors. It took three years and nine months to issue first-trial sentences against former Justice Minister Cho Kuk and two years and five months for Yoon Mi-hyang, an independent lawm.

DP to recommend departure to 12 lawmakers suspected of land speculation

The ruling Democratic Party (DP) has decided to demand 12 of its lawmakers leave the party, Tuesday, a day after they or their family members were accused of alleged real estate speculation by the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC). Among the 12, the party will arbitrarily expel two of their membership as they hold proportional representation seats, while it will withdraw 10 others from the party. The accused lawmakers include Kim Joo-young, Kim Hwe-jae, Moon Jin-seok, Youn Mi-hyang, Kim Han-jeong, Seo Young-seok, Lim Jong-seong, Yang Yi Won-young, Oh Young-hoon, Yoon Jae-gap, Kim Soo-heung, and Woo Sang-ho.

COVID-19 empties streets, yet people still donate for those in need

The sound of a small tin bell echoes throughout Seocho Subway Station, catching the attention of some of the rushing pedestrians on a December mid-afternoon. Following the sound in the middle of the hustle and bustle, they soon come across an iconic sight of the Christmas season here: a bright red kettle accompanied by a sign reading The Salvation Army.
