JERUSALEM (AP) Yitzhak Arad, a Holocaust survivor and scholar who was the director of Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial for more than two decades, has died at the age of 94, the center said Thursday.

At the end of July 1941, German troops entered Arad’s native town, Swieciany, located 50 miles north of Vilnius, which had a Jewish population of 3,000. Fifteen-year-old Yitzhak, along with a small group of young people, managed to escape and fled to neighbouring Belarus. The Jews who were left behind in Swieciany were taken to an isolated military camp and shot; only 250 skilled workers – tailors, shoemakers, carpenters – survived, forced to work for the German invaders.

He was born Yitzhak Rudnicki in 1926 in a town that was then in Poland and is now part of Lithuania. His parents were among the 6 million Jews killed by Nazi Germany and its collaborators during World War II. He managed to escape and joined the Soviet partisans in 1943, at the age of 16. He remained with them until the end of the war, fighting the Nazis in Belarus and Lithuania.
