Refinery rehabilitation : NNPC tasks contractor on project completion By Edith Ike-Eboh Port Harcourt, May 6th, 2021 The Nigerian National Petroleum corporation (NNPC) has tasked the Contractor rehabilitating the Port Harcourt Refineries Companies (PHRC) to ensure completion of the project at the estimated time frame. The Group Managing Director, Malam Mele Kyari disclosed this at the kick off meeting of the Rehabilitation of PHRC, in Port Harcourt, on Thursday. Naija247news reports that the meeting signified the take off of the rehabilitation project. The PHRC operates two refineries; the old refinery with a nameplate capacity of 60,000 barrels per stream day (bpsd) and new refinery with an installed capacity of 150,000 bpsd.

The repair, which will be executed by Tecnimont SPA, an Italian company, will be done in three phases of 18, 24 and 44 months. On Thursday, Mele Kyari, NNPC group managing director, and officials of Tecnimont SPA attended a kick off meeting on the rehabilitation of Port Harcourt Refinery Company (PHRC). Advertisement The meeting signified the take off of the rehabilitation project which will be funded through internally generated revenue (IGR), Afreximbank and budgetary provisions. The PHRC operates two refineries; the old refinery with a capacity of 60,000 barrels per stream day (bpsd) and new refinery with an installed capacity of 150,000 bpsd. The two refineries bring the Port Harcourt refinery’s combined crude processing capacity to 210,000bpsd.

Photo: TWITTER/NNPCGROUP The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Thursday handed over the Port Harcourt Refinery to Tecnimont SPA for the commencement of the $1.5 billion rehabilitation. The Group Managing Director of NNPC, Mele Kyari, who spoke at the event insisted that the first phase of the work would be completed in 24 months, adding that over 3, 000 Nigerians would be employed to complete the work. Represented by the Chief Financial Officer of the corporation, Umar Ajiya, Kyari noted that the country must do anything possible to refine its crude to stop total dependence on importation. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, had approved $1.5billion (about N575b) for rehabilitation of the 32-year-old refinery.
