With Hubble, astronomers use UV light for first time to measure a still-forming planet's growth rate

With Hubble, astronomers use UV light for first time to measure a still-forming planet’s growth rate
May 13, 2021
In 2018, the exo-planet PDS 70b was observed using the Very Large Array.  It’s discovery instantly placed it at the top of observation requests and telescope time for one quite profound reason: the exoplanet was still forming.
For the first time, a still-accreting planet had been discovered, providing astrophysicists a unique opportunity to study how planets form with real-time observations.  But one pesky problem existed: PDS 70b was far too close to its parent star for the usual exoplanet observational techniques to allow researchers to measure the planet’s growth rate. ....

Hubble Watches Young Planet Grow With New Imaging Technique

Astronomers have discovered more than 4,000 exoplanets using instruments like Kepler and the aging Hubble Space Telescope, but only a tiny handful have been imaged directly. One of those planets is PDS 70b, which is a very young gas giant planet orbiting a star some 370 light-years away. Hubble recently took a peek at this world using a new observational technique to reveal previously unseen details. This marks the first time scientists have been able to directly observe a still-forming exoplanet.  ....

Young, giant exoplanet chows down on gas as it grows

Thanks to the Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers have gotten a rare look at a young, Jupiter-sized planet that is growing by feeding off material surrounding a young star 370 light years from Earth.
“We just don’t know very much about how giant planets grow,” says Brendan Bowler, an assistant professor of astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin.
“This is the youngest bona fide planet Hubble has ever directly imaged.”
“This planetary system gives us the first opportunity to witness material falling onto a planet. Our results open up a new area for this research.”
Though more than 4,000 exoplanets have been cataloged, only about 15 have been directly photographed by telescopes. And the planets are so far away and small that they simply look like dots even in the best photos. The team’s fresh technique for using Hubble to directly image this planet paves a new route for further exoplanet research, especially during a planet’s formative years. ....

Young Exoplanet Update: It's the Size of Jupiter and Still Growing

It was previously reported that two planets – PDS 70b and PDS 70c – were orbiting a young star in the constellation Centaurus which is located approximately 370 light-years away from us. And according to new research that is focused on PDS 70b, the planet is huge and is still growing.
PDS 70b, which is about the size of Jupiter, orbits its host star at about the same distance as Uranus orbits our sun (Uranus orbits the sun at a distance of about 1.8 billion miles). The exoplanet is only believed to be about 5 million years ago, meaning that it is young compared to other worlds. It could be in its final stages of growth, so it’s very important that experts study it in order to find out how giant planets grow. ....
