墨子力主君王戒奢，他在《七辞》篇中列出“五节”，所“节”之内容，除了衣（衣服）、食（饮食）、住（宫室）、行（舟车），还有“蓄私”，即后宫的嫔妃侍妾。在他看来，男女之事，亦属“天壤之情”，即使“上世至圣”亦曾“蓄私”，因为“不以伤行”，“故民无怨。宫无拘女，故天下无寡夫”。当今之君“蓄私”无度，“大国拘女累千，小国累百”，以至“天下之男多寡无妻，女多拘无夫，男女失时，故民少”。因此，墨子认为，若想自己的国家人丁兴旺，君王“蓄私不可不节”。（参见《墨子·辞过》）
