As Israeli forces massed along the border with Gaza on Sunday before an expected ground invasion, escalating clashes on Israel’s northern border with Lebanon, as well as strikes in Syria and in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, intensified fears of a widening regional conflict.
Even as Israel has told Palestinians in Gaza to head south, airstrikes have continued to hit that part of the enclave. And an Israeli military spokesperson, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said Saturday night that Israel would “deepen” attacks on Gaza overall ahead of the “next stages” of the war.
Many civilians in northern Gaza are unable to flee due to the high cost of travel and the risk of Israeli airstrikes. The Israeli military has intensified its bombardment of the enclave and called for people to move south, warning that those who don t may be considered accomplices to terrorism. However, many families cannot afford the cost of travel, which has increased significantly during the conflict.
