1947年12月，陈毅、粟裕领导的华东野战军决定与陈谢兵团（陈赓、谢富治）配合，发起（北）平汉（口）路战役。华野三纵奉命破击官亭至许昌段铁路，并相机攻占许昌。
在广大群众的支援下，华野三纵不到两天就基本完成了破路任务，敌人在中原机动作战的最大动脉被切断。此外，华野三纵还攻下了和尚桥、苏桥车站，许昌城垣之敌已成孤军。
许昌作为平汉线上的一座重要城镇，此时是国民党军的一个重要屯兵站和补给基地，是我军在中原战场上机动作战的一个重大障碍。国民党军也看到了这一点，利用许昌城墙高、壕沟宽的特点，增调兵力、加强防守。
