China-European Union (EU) Geographical Indications (GIs) Agreement took effect on Monday, injecting a dose of stimulus into bilateral trade, and marking another milestone in cooperation between China and the EU.
 
GI is the label used for identifying the geographical origin of a product, and is also an important type of intellectual property right.
 
According to the agreement, 100 GIs from each side, involving liquor, tea, food and farm produce, came under protection on the same day, which means consumers from China and the EU could buy authentic specialities of each other without worries about the inferior and fake goods.
 
As China s first comprehensive, high-level bilateral agreement on GIs, its coming into effect fully testifies to China and the EU s commitment to upholding free and open trade, and supporting rules-based multilateral trading system, China s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Monday. ....

The start of 2021 is distinguished by the implementation of the landmark China-European Union (EU) bilateral agreement on protecting 100 European Geographical Indications (GIs) in China and 100 Chinese GIs in the EU against usurpation and imitation.
According to the agreement, the Chinese GI products protected in the EU include Pixian Dou Ban (Pixian bean paste), Anxi Tie Guan Yin (Anxi oolong tea), Panjin Da Mi (Panjin rice) and Wu Liang Ye (Wuliangye liquor), while the EU list protected in China includes Cava (a wine from Spain), Champagne (a wine from France), Feta (a cheese from Greece), Irish whiskey, Munchener Bier (a beer from Germany). ....
