Beijing [China], January 11 (ANI): The Chinese civil society has entered an unprecedented ice age after years of the crackdown by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), said a veteran dissident Ou Biaofeng, adding that any form of resistance these days is almost guaranteed to draw retaliation and clampdown .
China s clampdown on criticism of its response to the Coronavirus pandemic has included rounding up citizen journalists and silencing prominent academics and party members who have openly criticised its handling of the crisis, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported. ....

As the world struggled with the COVID-19 pandemic during the holiday season and Americans focused on Donald Trump’s frantic efforts to overturn the election he lost, China ended the year in a typical manner. As usual, the Chinese authorities embarked on their annual Christmas tradition of locking up dissidents and critics when the world was too distracted to pay attention.
Soon after Thanksgiving, Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow and Ivan Lam, young icons of the Hong Kong pro-democracy protests of 2014, were all sentenced to prison for taking part in an illegal assembly in 2019. Three days after Christmas, a Shanghai court sentenced citizen journalist Zhang Zhan to four years in prison for critical reporting on the government’s handling of COVID-19 in Wuhan early in the outbreak. ....

China is crushing any shred of resistance in Hong Kong, in breach of its promises to maintain the region’s freedoms. The arrest of more than 50 pro-democracy figures in the early hours of Wednesday morning, under the draconian national security law introduced last year, makes it clear that not only peaceful protest but political opposition itself is no longer acceptable. ....
