Alerts issued as animals make 400-km journey in Yunnan
Many people from Yunnan province often claim to have seen wild animals, including elephants, roaming local streets, as the province is known as the nation s kingdom of wildlife .
However, such claims have recently been verified beyond a doubt.
Video footage taken on Thursday in the Eshan Yi autonomous county shows a herd of 15 wild Asian elephants roaming the streets in a downtown area at night after leaving their habitat in Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve in the south of Yunnan last year. ....

China s Yunnan donates anti-epidemic supplies to Laos

KUNMING, May 14 (Xinhua) Southwest China s Yunnan Province recently donated a batch of anti-epidemic supplies worth approximately 650,000 yuan (around 100,841 U.S. dollars) to Laos to help the country fight against COVID-19.
The supplies that include 600,000 face masks and 3,000 protective suits have been provided by Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture for five provinces in northern Laos including Bokeo and Oudomsay.
Wu Chunhua, deputy head of the Xishuangbanna prefectural government, said that China and Laos are good neighbors and solidarity and cooperation are the most powerful weapons in the fight against COVID-19.
As of Friday, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Laos has risen to 1,498, with 513 patients discharged from hospital after recovery. ....

Earlier this week China held its first ever National Low Carbon Day (全国低碳日). Several of the mainland s megacities instituted cap and trade programs aimed at limiting pollution levels. Yunnan, although not required to participate by Beijing, launched a carbon sequestration program of its own.
In a provincial first, the Yunnan Development and Reform Commission has brokered a deal wherein Yunnan Forestry Investment Company (YFI) sold carbon credits worth 17,800 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) to Guangdong-based Friends of Iron and Steel (FIS). In exchange for the credits, FIS has agreed to pay 1.07 million yuan (US$174,000). ....
