Chinese aluminium smelters forced away from captive coal-fired power - report

A new report by Wood Mackenzie states that China’s march towards carbon neutrality is forcing its aluminium smelters away from using captive coal-fired power. WoodMac’s estimates show that smelters released about 12.36 tonnes of CO2e per tonne of aluminium produced from coal-fired power generation last year. Over 80% of aluminium capacity in China is based on coal-fired power. However, this strategy has become harder to sustain under China’s goals to control energy consumption and achieve carbon neutrality.
