The coronavirus pandemic affected everything from daily tasks like shopping at grocery stores and helping kids with their school work to celebrations like graduations and weddings. Essential workers worked overtime. Thousands of people lost their jobs and others worked from home. We visited loved ones on Zoom and learned new phrases like “social distancing,” “face masks” and “the new normal.” There were protests against police brutality and rallies for presidential candidates too. The Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail tested all its staff members and inmates for the coronavirus last week. The results? 78 inmates and seven staff members are positive for the virus. “All 78 inmates who tested positive are currently asymptomatic, this is in addition to the single inmate who tested positive for COVID-19 last week,” according to the VPRJ’s Facebook post on Dec. 24. On Dec. 22, VPRJ announced in a news release they would test all the jail’s inmates and staff for the coronavirus after an inmate and an unknown number of staff members tested positive the week before. Around 450 tests were administered by the Virginia Army National Guard and the Virginia Department of Health. ....

Ralph Northam’s new executive order ––which went into effect on Dec. 14–––social gatherings are now limited to 10 people or less. In addition, there is a “modified stay-at-home” order which starts at midnight through 5 a.m. with exceptions for essentials like groceries, work travel and medical emergencies. Now, residents five years and older must wear masks and everyone has to wear masks indoors and outdoors with a minimum social distance of six feet apart from people not in your household. ....
