The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for the New Orleans area. Severe storms are sweeping across the South on Wednesday. Kevin Gilmore with the National Weather Service New Orleans office said in a 2:15 p.m. Facebook Live broadcast that areas far northwest of New Orleans metro area are looking at a chance for “really violent tornadoes.” The NWS expects the severe weather, including hail, strong wind and heavy rain to reach the New Orleans area around 6 p.m. The region s tornado watch will remain in effect until 9 p.m. Credit NWS New Orleans Gilmore stressed the need to be weather-aware and encouraged people to turn on extreme weather alerts on their cell phones. ....
New Orleans City Council voted unanimously Thursday to expand its curfew and truancy laws to include 17-year-olds. The vote was taken up as part of the council’s consent agenda, held for “routine or non-controversial matters.” But the expansion, introduced by Councilmembers Jay Banks and Cyndi Nguyen, has sparked controversy. Council members listened to several statements opposing the expansion. Commenters cited data from the Southern Poverty Law Center, which reported that during the summer of 2019, when a youth curfew was reinstated, nearly 85 percent of all children stopped for curfew violations were Black. A coalition called the Youth Justice Advocates, made up of several organizations including Step Up NOLA and the Louisiana Center for Children’s Rights, released a statement following the vote. ....

Nearly 3,000 of the district’s 8,000 eligible employees had received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine through the district’s partnership with local healthcare providers as of Monday. Officials expected vaccine distribution to take between six and eight weeks but Tuesday’s press release said they were able to cut the timeline in half due to increased availability. “Our ability to complete this process in just under three weeks is a testament to the commitment of our healthcare partners, schools’ leaders, and school staff,” the press release said. ....
