West Virginia University on Thursday held an online Campus Conversation about the Campus Self-Defense Act. The new law goes into effect July 1 and permits the carrying of concealed handguns on college and university campuses in West Virginia. The university recently adopted its own policy governing the implementation of the law.
West Virginia University s Board of Governors is gearing up to vote on a rule this Friday regarding the implementation of a new law permitting weapons on college campuses. Following Governor Jim Justice s signing of Senate Bill 10 into law on March 1, 2023, West Virginia became the 12th state to enact "campus carry" legislation, allowing concealed carry permit holders to bring firearms onto public college and university grounds. The upcoming vote on Board of Governor’s Rule 5.1.4 at WVU will shape the university’s operational approach to this issue. Opponents argue the law could jeopardize campus safety, while supporters view it as a matter of Second Amendment rights.
As the result of an appeal, West Virginia University will not eliminate all foreign language instruction. Some courses in Chinese and Spanish will be retained.
