The presiding officer without objection. Mr. Isakson thank you, madam president. Its an honor to be here today on whats not my last day but everybody is acting like it. A few months ago i had to an announce that after much consideration to be able to serve the people of georgia, when i knew i couldnt do the job i was going to quit and let somebody do it who wouldnt be hampered. Im not hampered yet. Im pretty tough. But its getting close. In august i decided to tell my wife about it, and we decided to go ahead and retire at the end of december, which ive announced and said i was going to do. The governor of georgia is making an appointment to take my place and you might look in the history books, current history and it might have an isakson in the glossary, but i doubt it. Isakson, who is i retiring befoe the end of the year. Over the last few months, thereve been numerous tributes here on the senate floor. Hes been called a real friend and mentor, humbled and tenacious, they dont come any better and that is just by democrats. Thats one of the reasons i suggested that we have a lunch for Johnny Isakson that we are having this afternoon. Just like there is good reason to praise him in the way democrats did, theres good reason that during his chairmanship, his committee passed so many bipartisan bills, 57 to be exact, to help veterans. Its because he treated everyone, democrat, republican, independent, Committee Chair with respect, and he never let the political times then his faith in the ability to gethe something done. He didnt have the loudest voice in the room was often the most influential because he built up years worth of trust in never ....
Because i think of the people who have spoken on this floor since 1859, and im always measured in what i try to bring in terms of thought or whatever, but today is a special sense of responsibility. Senator coons and i have been chosen to lead our colleagues in honoring Johnny Isakson today. What we heard is historic, i believe. Its not the first time that weve had a speech on this floor that addressed that topic, nor will it be the last, i would predict. But we just heard johnny admonish us to judge with our conscience and our heart. And, with that, i feel somewhat unworthy to try to address what i feel and what he also talked about is his heart. Today is truly a bittersweet occasion. Its bitter because my friend, my mentor and partner in the United States senate, Johnny Isakson, is stepping down at the end of this month ....

Next week americans will honor our nations veterans who have paid the price for our freedom in times of conflict and served as our shield in times of peace. Today, nearly 20 million americans have earned the title of veteran. Im proud to say that maine is home to more than 114,000 veterans. The second highest percentage in our entire country. We owe them such a great debt. The gratitude we express in words on veterans day can repay this debt only in small measure. A truly grateful nation must match its words with actions. As we will learn today, one issue that calls for our immediate action is to fight a newer enemy facing our veterans and that is those relentless con artists who seek to rob them of their life savings and defraud them of the benefits they have earned in service to our country. Often, veterans fall victim to the same scams that this committee has highlighted in recent years such as the irs imposter scam, the grandparent sca ....
