Diplomatic Affairs Editor Suhasini Haidar analyses whether there is a backchannel currently in play between India and Pakistan
There have been a slew of media reports on a “backchannel dialogue” between the two countries that are discussing a number of initiatives. Two Pakistani news sites reported that the current round of negotiations allegedly date as far back as to 2018, and that Indian and Pakistan officials discussed, amongst other things, the possibility of Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending a SAARC summit in Pakistan in October 2021. Now, a UAE diplomat confirmed reports that it is involved in facilitating a dialogue between the two countries.

While the special COVID-19 vaccine initiative which will draw on India s manufacturing capabilities, U.S. research and funding from Japan and Australia s distribution network is the highlight, there were many other messages especially from the U.S. on building a region free from coercion, a possible barb at China, also a clear sign from Mr. Biden on the importance of Indo-Pacific strategy. Mr Modi said the Quad is a force for global good and has come of age.

In this week s episode of Worldview, our Diplomatic Affairs Editor Suhasini Haidar tries to unravel one of India’s most close and complex relationships - that between New Delhi and Colombo. After weeks of a strain in ties over Sri Lanka’s decision to scrap the East Container Terminal project with India and Japan, a truce has been effected. Both countries have accepted a deal for the West Container Terminal Project.
Both India and Japan had earlier expressed displeasure about Colombo “unilaterally” pulling out of the 2019 tripartite agreement, signed by the former Maithripala Sirisena-Ranil Wickremesinghe government.

Indian Council of Medical Research Director-General Balram Bhargava said the third clinical trial of Covaxin BB152 had been completed as all the 25,800 volunteers involved in the exercise had been administered both the doses. “The interim analysis report should be out in a week,” he said.
