A sight for sore eyes: Howard Road Bridge reopens

CUMBERLAND – Michael Kanakry was so excited to see the bridge next to his home reopen Monday that he drove across it just for fun.
Kanakry, who has been keeping a close eye on the work for what seems like forever, said he and his wife Joanne were thrilled to see the bridge finally opened to traffic after three years of detours.
The Kanakry family, 40-year residents of 3 Howard Road, was among those who told The Breeze back in May that they were skeptical of the latest estimate of late summer for completion by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. ....

Town completes installation of drainage pipe after flooding

CUMBERLAND – Crews were wrapping up some finishing touches on installation of a new drainage pipe near the Diamond Hill roundabouts this week, said Mayor Jeff Mutter, but the line was fully functional for a second major storm in a week last Saturday.
Highway Supt. Frank Stowik was on site last Saturday morning and told The Breeze that the water was flowing properly through the pipes.
There were some people angry over the situation that caused homes to flood earlier in the week, said Stowik, but their houses were not the ones being flooded. Town workers got the job done for the taxpayers, he said. ....
