The 2.8 million-square-foot Green Empire Farms greenhouses in Oneida provide great views of the outdoors but too few ways for workers to step outside in an emergency, according to the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
During an investigation in May and June of last year, OSHA inspectors found four violations in the massive hydroponics greenhouse and issued four “serious” citations carrying a combined potential fine of $26,988 in December. Serious means that workplaces include hazards “that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees.”
These are the violations noted in an OSHA report:
Two greenhouses in the complex, both about 820-feet wide and 2,625-feet long did not contain any emergency exit doors; each just has two overhead doors, one at the west end and one at the east end. ....
