WAYNE TWP. The residents at Smithville Western Care Center honored America s fallen servicemen and women on Thursday with an early Memorial Day service. The Wooster American Legion Post 68 presented the colors and played taps while Sgt. Cory Daughtery with the U.S. Marines delivered a short prayer for the residents gathered outside the Sprenger Health Care facility. At least 20 residents walked or were wheeled out to sit in the sun or under the overhang to observe. I liked it. It was well worth coming out to see, said Gary Sloan, who served in the U.S Marine Corps from 1970 to 1972. Sloan helped start the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program in Wooster and organized the event for eight years before moving into the care center for health issues. ....
Communities and veterans organizations will return to the cemetery this Memorial Day to honor their fallen servicemen and women. COVID-19 concerns caused many communities to cancel last year’s Memorial Day events or limit their activities. Some of those communities will be bringing back their parades while most will reopen up the ceremonies to the public. Memorial Day is always observed on the last Monday in May.
