Rarely do Virginia and California fall into the same legislative camp, but if the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act is signed by its governor (as is widely expected), both states will have a sweeping data privacy act. Rarely do Virginia and California fall into the same camp on legislation, but that may change with Virginia’s Consumer Data Privacy Act (the “Act”). The Virginia House of Delegates overwhelmingly passed the Act on January 29
th, and the Virginia Senate passed an identical companion bill on February 3
rd. If signed into law by Governor Northam, the Act would make Virginia the second state in the U.S. to enact sweeping consumer data privacy legislation.
The Act adopts consumer privacy concepts from the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the new California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), and Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including: ....

FAIRFAX, Va. (CN) Two years to the day after Amber Heard published an editorial describing the backlash she faced as a domestic abuse survivor, a Virginia judge ordered the actress to produce her arrest record as part of discovery in a defamation case brought by her ex-husband Johnny Depp.
Depp contends that Heard was the abuser during their 15-month marriage that began in 2015. Her arrest record, which involves an altercation with a different romantic partner more than a decade ago, is “crucial to key allegations in Mr. Depp’s complaint,” said the actor’s lawyer, Benjamin Chew of Brown Rudnick, during a hearing Friday in Fairfax County.     ....
