May 14, 2021 The third Eastern Produce Council Leadership Class experienced key aspects of the produce logistics and distribution system with a tour of the Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market and Holt Logistics on May 11. “In this first event of our current leadership program we were excited to engage this group of talented industry professionals with such crucial supply chain partners such as PWPM and Holt,” said Susan McAleavey Sarlund, EPC executive director. The group started the day at PWPM with a presentation on the market’s history, evolution and current technology from John Vena of John Vena Inc., a former member of the PWPM Board of Directors and current “unofficial historian.” Vena explained how the PWPM traces its roots back to the days of William Penn and noted the current modern facility will celebrate its 10th anniversary this June. “Terminal markets have always played an important role in the distribution of produce,” he said. Kunik Company (“I. Kunik”), a major distributor of Persian limes grown in Mexico, and the purchase of the operations of B&S Grupo Exportador, S.A. de C.V. (“B&S”), a major supplier of Persian limes to the worldwide market. As part of the transaction, Wonderful Citrus also acquired nearly 2,000 acres of Persian lime orchards in Mexico, making it the largest lime grower in the country when combined with its existing lime acreage. ....
But it’s not the farm owners who are the biggest scofflaws, a new report finds. It’s the middlemen. Farm work is one of the toughest jobs in America. Crop pickers and field hands labor in potentially killer heat for low pay, usually without the benefit of health insurance. During the pandemic, the cramped conditions in dormitories and fields have made them especially susceptible to virus spread. And now, a new report shows, their bosses are more likely to stiff them on wages. Between 2000 and 2019, the federal Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division (WHD) conducted more than 31,000 investigations of farm employers, and 70 percent of them detected violations, according to data analysis by the Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank. That led to employers coughing up $76 million in back wages to 154,000 farmworkers, and $63 million in civil penalties for violations related to inadequate housing, transportation, and record-keeping. ....
