Spotting bushfires from space

Storm-chasing drones, smart water bombers, and a constellation of bushfire-spotting satellites could be the key to reducing Australia’s devastating bushfire toll.
Imagine lightning strikes a tree in a deep, dry valley. A satellite equipped with infrared sensors detects it within minutes and notifies a drone. The camera-equipped drone zips to the site, and the blaze is confirmed (since satellites can have high rates of false alarms).
Then a C-130 plane, flying high and safe overhead, drops a water-carrying glider with an automated guidance system over the fire, putting it out before it can become a devastating bushfire.

Staying at Wolgan Valley is so much more than a passive outback or bush experience. Guests of all ages are given the opportunity to add and learn about the environment. Besides the habitat mapping, tree planting, and foraging, there are always kids (dubbed Wolgan Rangers) bounding after field guides, trying to spot wiggly insects or gliding birds, learning about the land and the weird and wonderful Dr. Seuss-like animals that only exist here. The whole kids program now includes a regenerative element, where we teach through games and exploration, how to protect and repair, explained general manager Tim Stanhope.

Premium Content  New measures will be put in place to save a tiny colony of an ancient tree species that dates back to when dinosaurs roamed the earth. One year on from a heroic rescue effort to save the Wollemi Pine colony from the Gospers Mountain mega blaze, the grove of 47 living fossils will be given special status by the state government to ensure they remain protected from future blazes. With scientific research indicating the species will come under increasing threat as bushfires become more frequent, plans will be put in place to ensure no fires get near the secret grove where the trees will grow for the next 50 years.
