need backbone, facing a $600 million budget deficit and a massive shortfall in the city s pensions. those pensions need reform, but unlike some republican governorseses, he won t fight the unions. in chicago we re going to chart a different course. not the course that wisconsin set. because? well, because i m going to work it out with them. they re partners. this is chicago. we re going to do it different than wisconsin. as wisconsin governor said, it s my way or the highway. the opponents include the former school board head, gary chico. the attacks have gotten personal. rahm has turned out to be a pathological evader of the truth. we have no answers, and the citizens are about to go to the polls in a few short days. reporter: polls show emanuel leading the pack. throughout the race he s been uncharacteristically calm and on message. he hasn t even been seen cursing. when is the last time you cursed? when is the last time?
reporter: what you re not saying is a cut. no. what we will do is we ll work together through this issue. now, what happens, that mean i understand you guys are all from cnn, very interested in the national story in chicago we re chartering a different course. we re not chartering a course that wisconsin set. reporter: because? because i m going to work it out with them. they re partners. reporter: feisty. a little bit. reporter: he ll do things a little different from wisconsin. not surprised, not at all. something not a lot of people realize about chicago, chicago has no term limits so this is a job that emanuel says he wanted so if he wins, he could be there for a while. reporter: that s true. mayor daley was in the job 22 years, but there s still a big hurdle first. this has it s a little bit kind of mayor s race. there s a primary today, and if nobody gets 50% of the vote it goes to a runoff so this might not be it. there could be a runoff on april 5th.
