Deeper Life School: Court commences trial behind closed-door
The alleged sexual abuse of an 11-year-old boy in a school dorm has attracted huge public interest.
The trial of
the Deeper Life High School sexual abuse case commenced on Wednesday in Uyo, with the magistrate court holding its proceedings behind closed-door.
Two students of the school, both of them 13 years old, accused of sexually molesting a fellow student, an 11-year-old boy, are being prosecuted by the police.
Five officials of the school, including a suspended principal, are also on trial.
An official, said to be the court registrar, asked people, including lawyers, who were not parties in the case, to leave the courtroom before the proceedings began. ....

A Chief Magistrate in Uyo, Winifred Umohandy, on Thursday, cautioned Deborah Archibong, the mother of the victim of the alleged sexual abuse at the Deeper Life High School to desist from discussing the case on Facebook.
Mrs Archibong has been gaining a huge following on Facebook since December
when she came out to say via Facebook livethat her 11-year-old son, a JSS1 student of the school, was sexually abused by two senior students of the school. ....

A legal practitioner, Inibehe Effiong, has condemned “the desecration” of the judiciary in Akwa Ibom State on Wednesday, in a case involving President Muhammadu Buhari and Akwa Ibom Governor, Udom Emmanuel.
Four citizens, who took part in a peaceful protest led by End Bad Governance Initiative, were arrested by the Police on Tuesday outside Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.
They are Idopise Ette Oton, Obot MfonGod, God’sfriend Michael and Victor Nta George.
The group had gone to the legislature to express their dissatisfaction with bad leadership, ASUU strike, freezing of accounts of End SARS protesters, border closure, increment in electricity tariff and fuel pump price, among others. ....
